BBC unveils online space archive
-
The BBC has unveiled an archive of video content from the Space: Flying Visits series that was first shown in 2005.You can now see videos from the Space: Flying Visits series on the BBC Archive website.
The archive consists of seven videos taken from the 2005 BBC Four series, which contain fascinating information about the universe and the beginnings of life on our planet.
The computer-generated imagery is a joy to behold, even nearly five years after the Space: Flying Visits series was made. However, the constantly changing soundtrack becomes a little irritating at times.
One particularly thought-provoking detail comes in the episode Are We Alone?. In 1977, the so-called Wow! signal was picked up by the University of Ohio’s listening project but disappeared before instruments could be trained on it.
Some have speculated that the signal could have been sent from a space vehicle of extra-terrestrial origin, though others, including Dr Jerry Ehman who actually detected the signal, believe it to have originated from Earth and reflected back off a piece of space debris.
Some of the videos are narrated by actor Sam Neill.
