Bill Cosby not dead despite online rumours

  • Actor and comedian Bill Cosby is the latest celebrity to be targeted by online rumours claiming he is dead.

Rumours are currently circulating online suggesting that actor Bill Cosby has died at the age of 72.

A fake CNN news report, similar to the one used in the recent Johnny Depp death hoax, appeared over the weekend claming that Bill Cosby was dead.

However, when the link to the report is clicked on, a fake warning about security problems on your computer appears.

The warning messages then attempt to scare you into downloading a fake anti-virus program and, potentially, handing over your credit card details.

Bill Cosby RIP‘ became a Twitter trend at the weekend, which further fuelled the reports and led to increases in the scareware attacks, according to security firm Sophos.

The actor posted a message on his website on Saturday refuting the rumours.

Bill Cosby is the latest celebrity to fall victim to malicious rumours such as there. Johnny Depp and Kanye West are among others.

There is also a rise in hackers hijacking trending topics to create security scares as seen with Emma Stone and Britney Spears and also the deaths of Patrick Swayze and Stephen Gateley.
