Surfers spend on average two-and-a-half days a year waiting for slow-loading web pages, according to a report. The average surfer spends so long waiting for web pages to load that the time spent adds up to nearly two and a half days every year.
And more than five online transactions per person are abandoned a year because of frustation, costing web retailers a whopping £5.65bn.
Research carried out by Hostway and Zeus Technology also found that 82 per cent of online buyers are put off using a site and even going into a high-street store if a brand’s website performs poorly.
Slow page-loading was cited as the biggest complaint but people also criticised online advertising and bad web links.
Flash and multimedia content was blamed by the report for being the cause of many retail websites’ poor performance.
“Online traffic will continue to grow, so it’s important that retailers ensure that their websites are scalable enough to cope with large visitor numbers and large amounts of multimedia content,” said Graham Moore, e-retail specialist at Zeus Technology.
Last week a study found that web stress does exist and that when online expectations aren’t met, people quickly become agitated, confused and have to concentrate 50 per cent more than normal.
